Taking a break.

Please note that messages sent to me regarding Newted Community business will not get an immediate reply over the next week or two. I am taking a break from all things computer related and will be digging into some other projects for a bit. This unfortunately means that the turnaround time for any new requests for Newted Community memberships will be dragged our somewhat. As always, your patience is appreciated. I promise that all requests and inquiries will be addressed in one swell foop when things return to normal in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, don’t break anything, ok?

Newtons Around The World tops 100 submissions.

As Groucho Marx once quipped:
“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.”
Not even a full month has passed and yet another update to the Newtons Around The World gallery has landed in our collective lap. Please paddle your paws for new photographs from Brian McEwen, Erich Funke, John Charlton, and yours truly, Grant Hutchinson. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Brian McEwen for being the first to drop off the 100th image in the gallery foyer. For his timely contribution, Brian receives an addition 20MB of storage space to top up his Founders Membership account on the Newted Community server. I promise to provide an equally stimulating prize for the 200th submission as well. Now get snapping, kids.

Newtons Around The World updated.

After what must seem like an inordinate amount of time since the last update, the Newtons Around The World gallery has a fresh set of images gracing its virtual walls. This time around we’re featuring the photographic handiwork of Rick Ludwig, Jonathan Wise, Tom Fall, Geoff Chan, and the prolific Newton shutterbug, Mr John Charlton. New images start at the bottom of page six.

New article in the Soupbox.

In celebration of the upcoming tenth anniversary of the launch of our favourite green handheld, a new article by Robert Velarde entitled Happy Birthday, Newton! has been added to the Soupbox. This piece was orginally published on the Christian Macintosh Users Group site. Thanks go to Robert and CMUG or allowing me to mirror this great article on the Newted Community.

Yes, we’re still here.

I realize it’s been very quiet in the news section, but to be honest, there just hasn’t been much happening around the server lately. A lack of surprises is a good thing when your running a Linux-based community site, trust me. If you’re looking for what’s new, you might want to check out the recent activity on the Message Boards – they’ve been literally abuzz this month. And of course, I’m always in the mood for a few more submissions to the Newtons Around The World gallery. Oh, and happy summer to everybody.

Just because I needed something to do this evening, the links page has been updated with a few new interesting places to visit. If you have a Newton related site that you’d like to see listed on the links page, email me the address and a brief description of what the heck I’ll be linking to. Remember, this is your community too. Feel free to contribute.

Unless you count the recent blasts of activity on the message boards of late, there really hasn’t been much going on around the old Newted Community. Not much except for a handful of new submissions to the Newtons Around the World gallery. A furious wave of the noggin’ topper to Victor Rehorst, Steven Frank and the fresh face of Kerry Lannert for adding to the plethoric pile of public pixels.

Another month, another perfect pile of pixel pictures. What am I talking about? Why, Newtons Around The World, of course. The infamous gallery of green machines has been updated once again, this time featuring the photographic handiwork of John Charlton, Paul Filmer, and newcomer Julian Wright. Hey, I’m still waiting for you other folks to send in something. What are you waiting for?

Software Update Notice: Tonight, I upgraded the message boards to a incrementally more recent version of the Ultimate Bulletin Board software. I made the cautious leap from our cranky old version 5.39b to the Y2K-compliant 5.47e. The one thing that you may notice with this version is that it fixes the email time stamp issue as previously mentioned on this very page. There are a few other minor enhancements, such as “hot topic” notification, and the usual schwack of bug fixes. All of these changes are documented on the Infopop site in greater detail than I personally care to go into here. If you’re interested in that sort of thing, knock yourself out. This upgrade is the first step in getting the latest and greatest version of UBB.classic installed. However, I wanted to make sure that this interim version fixed the immediate problems we were having. Please let me know if you experience any weirdness when using the message boards over the next couple of weeks. If all goes well, I’ll start looking into upgrading to version 6.x of the software.
