New additions to the Newtons Around The World gallery.

Summer is nearly here, and what better time to update the Newtons Around The World gallery than when the sun is warm and the grass is green? (Actually, it’s raining here in Calgary today, effectively putting a damper on my yard work. So, here I sit, working on my web sites instead of mucking about outside…) This update features submissions from several first time contributors, including: Bernie Ortmann, Daniel Padilla, Jacob Hunter and Janusz Garbalinski. Veteran photographers Paul Guyot and Peter Cameron round out the batch. The most recent images start on page nine. And as a matter of course, I’m going to tack on my regular reminder to the rest of you to keep on snapping. This project is only as interesting as the people who send in pictures. The submission guidelines are parked in their usual spot. Enjoy.

The new home of the Newton Battery FAQ.

I am pleased to announce that until further notice, this site will be the new home of the Newton Battery FAQ as prepared by Joseph N. Hall & Eric Damien Berna. The Newton Battery FAQ was originally hosted on Eric’s personal site, but has since gone missing. This is what obsolete things tend to do on the web. It is now archived here for both posterity and future reference. Heck, it may even get updated at some point down the path.

Another batch of Newtons Around The World.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. These are the first additions to the Newtons Around The World gallery in over three months, and part of that is my fault. I’ve been sitting on a few of these submissions for a while, simply waiting to get a significant number of new images to post in a single swoop. Well, enough with the delay already. Please take a peek at the fine work produced by the following Newton-toting photographers: Fu Kay, Brian Middleton, Paul Guyot, Rhonda Hyslop, and Roman Pixell. What? No new images from Paul Filmer? This may be the end of the world as we know it. The latest images start at the bottom of page eight. Remember to send in your own images as well. The submission guidelines are in their usual spot.

No news is good news.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the Newted Community is humming along just fine, thank you very much. The news page has been pretty darn quiet over the past couple of months, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a little bit unsettling. In reality, I’ve simply been busy on other projects and everything here in server land has been running ticketyboo. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Now I’ve probably gone and jinxed it all, haven’t I? Doh.

Newtons Around The World updated. Again.

Yes, it’s the first update of the new year for the ever popular Newtons Around The World gallery. It’s not a huge update, but what it lacks in density, it more than makes up in style and finesse. Please mash your mittens together for the photographers of this edition: Michael Briley, Peter Fraser, and the most regular Paul Filmer. The latest images start at the bottom of page eight. Remember to send in your own images as well. The submission guidelines tell all.

Newted Community membership fee increases.

It’s one of those things that you really don’t want to have to do, but sometimes it’s inevitable. Due to the rising costs of providing the services of this site, I have decided that I must start charging for basic Newted Community Associate-level membership and also raise the price of the Founders level membership. This will not affect existing memberships or accounts. Anyone who has already applied for or obtained an Associates or Founders account will not be affected. This change only applies to new accounts requested after today. While I do not believe that the amount I have decided to charge is a drastic change, it is an increase nonetheless.
Since Stacey Tenen launched the Newted Community back in 1999, the entry-level Associates membership has always been free. This entry-level membership will now require payment of a minimal one-time $10USD fee. To lessen the blow of the new membership fee, I have increased the default server space available to Associate members from 3MB up to 10MB.
Likewise, the fee for the Founders membership – which previously required payment of a one-time $10USD fee and included 30MB of server space – has been increased to $25USD, but now includes 50MB of server space. All in all, I feel that this is a generous and still quite affordable solution for community-based email access and web space.
For existing Newted Community members, I am also offering the option of upgrading their accounts. Associate accounts may upgrade their 3MB of server space to the 10MB level and Founders accounts may upgrade their 30MB of server space to 50MB. The amount for this upgrade is a one-time fee of $5, payable through this form.
Additional details regarding what is included in Newted Community membership may be found on the membership information. Thanks again to everyone for your support of the Newted Community over the past five years.

Voting for the 2003 Newtie Awards has begun.

It’s that time of the year again kids. Time to cast your votes for the 2003 Newtie Awards. What the heck is a Newtie, you may well ask? Well, allow me to elucidate. The Newties are annual awards celebrating the best Newton-related software releases, upgrades, hardware hacks, web sites, and personalities our little old green-bleeding community has to offer. They are the brainchild by Rich Lindsay, proprietor of the infamous This Old Newt web site. This year, the Newted Community web site and my personal Newton web server are once again in the running for awards in their respective categories. If you happen to have a moment or two, why not head on over to the official Newtie Awards Voting Booth and flip a virtual lever for your favourites. And if one of my sites happens to be on your list, then thanks in advance.

New in the gallery: Siemens 2000 Notephone Prototype

I am pleased to point that out a new set of pictures documenting the infamous Siemens 2000 Notephone has been posted to the Newted Community Gallery. Thanks to Robert Benschop for forwarded the images and associated information that he recieved from the one and only Hannes Wolf (CyBear).

On a related note, I’d like to mention that I would be more than happy to post pictures of other prototype or ‘hopped-up super-modified’ Newtons if you happen to have one (or two) yourself. That’s what the Newted Community Gallery pages are for. Just let me know.
